What are Nail Fungal Infections?


Nail fungal diseases are also known by their medical name as onychomycosis. It is a fungal infection that can appear as a white or yellow spot on the toenails and fingernails. It is a disease caused by a type of fungus called dermatophyte. These fungi, called dermatophytes, are mold and yeast fungi of the Candida type. It may cause shape changes, thickening and odor in the nail. It can spread from a single nail to other toenails. Nail fungus can be seen at any age.


Diabetes can cause fungal infection. People with diabetes may have reduced blood circulation. Therefore, the occurrence of infectious skin diseases is an expected situation. In this case, symptoms such as bleeding around the nail, swelling and pain, and difficulty walking may be observed.


How are Nail Fungal Infections Treated?


In order to treat the disease, a dermatologist must first diagnose nail fungus through a physical examination. After the necessary examinations, he carries out the treatment process of the disease by applying topical and/or oral treatment methods. Antifungal creams, nail softening creams, and oral medications may be prescribed. Laser treatment methods are also carried out successfully in our hospital with the recommendations of the doctor.


Nail fractures can occur due to many reasons such as vascular diseases, anemia, vitamin deficiencies, thyroid diseases, cancer drugs, infections, and frequent use of chemicals on nails. In these cases, the treatment process is carried out according to the course of the disease. More serious complications can be prevented by methods such as removing a part of the nail, removing the entire nail, or removing tissue.
