What is Orthodontic Dental Treatment?

Orthodontics; It is the specialty of the branch of dentistry that diagnoses the alignment of mismatched and crooked teeth, tries to prevent and treat this situation. Orthodontics is the branch of science that examines the crookedness of the teeth, the relationship of the jaw bones with each other and the bones of the head, and diagnoses the existing problems related to these. Orthodontic treatment is a way of treating disorders in this system.

Why Do Orthodontic Problems Occur and How Are They Treated?

If the patient's lower and upper jaw structure is backwards during adolescence, it can be treated with orthodontic techniques. If the patient is an adult, orthodontics and surgery are performed in cooperation. Depending on functional disorders, e.g. Jaw disharmony may be observed in situations such as mouth breathing. Situations that should not be done and have become habits, such as using a bottle or a pacifier for a long time, thumb sucking, and nail biting, may cause orthodontic disorders. These habits should be treated as early as possible. It is important to prevent these habits at an early age in order to complete skeletal development. Situations such as the tongue being structurally larger than necessary and the presence of extracted tooth cavities also cause gaps in the teeth. If the jaw structure to which the teeth attach is small and the teeth are large; The teeth do not fit into the jaw and crowding occurs. Early or late loss of primary teeth may also cause crooked teeth. Instead of milk teeth falling out of the mouth prematurely, the permanent tooth in the mouth slides into this space. Since the teeth that need to come out cannot find a place for themselves, crookedness occurs.

How Necessary is Orthodontic Treatment?

Orthodontic treatment is not only concerned with aesthetics, but also aims to prevent gum diseases that may be encountered in the future, to prevent problems in the jaw joint, to ensure chewing functionality and to eliminate this problem of individuals with speech disorders. Depending on the existing orthodontic problem in the mouth, treatment methods can be determined with removable appliances, functional appliances and fixed appliances. Simple orthodontic problems that are not at an advanced stage can be solved with rubber removable appliances that the patient can use by attaching and removing them. It is of great importance not to neglect reinforcement treatments in order to prevent reversal and deterioration in the treatments performed after the primary orthodontic treatments are completed. Different passive devices can be used for this period. The branch of orthodontics works in constant cooperation with other sub-branches of dentistry.
