Urinary Tract Infection in Children

Urinary tract infections are among the most common diseases in children. It is inflammation in the system that removes urine from the body. It is a disease that occurs as a result of bacteria entering the bladder and kidneys. Most of these infections are caused by bacteria called Escherichia Coli (E.Coli).

Girls have a higher risk of urinary tract infections because their urethras are shorter.

What are the symptoms of urinary tract infections?

Urinary tract infections may occur without any symptoms in children. Even if the child has a urinary tract infection, it may not be noticed by the parent in the initial stages. Burning during urination Pain in the lower abdomen Frequent desire to go to the toilet Foul-smelling urine Vomiting Fever The symptoms given above should be checked by parents and if you notice any of these symptoms, you should be examined by a pediatrician.

How is urinary tract infection diagnosed in children?

In children, symptoms are primarily obtained by the doctor from the parents or, depending on age, from the patient. Past history is listened to and a physical examination is performed. A urine test is requested by the pediatrician. Red blood cells, white blood cells, bacteria, protein and signs of infection are detected in the urine. If deemed necessary, kidney ultrasound is requested. With ultrasonic examination, the condition of the kidneys and the flow in the blood vessels are determined.

How are urinary tract infections treated in children?

The treatment of urinary tract infection in children is usually resolved with antibiotic support. Depending on the age of the child and the course of the disease, the administration of antibiotic support in syrup, tablets or intravenously may vary. Depending on persistent high fever, high infection levels and the patient's condition, the patient may need to be hospitalized and receive treatment under supervision. If the home treatment process is deemed appropriate, plenty of rest, taking extra fluids, regular administration of antibiotics on time and in appropriate amounts, and a healthy and regular diet affect the healing process.

To prevent urinary tract infections, children should be careful about toilet hygiene and consuming plenty of fluids. Toilet hygiene should be performed with a movement towards the anus (from front to back), especially in girls. The bacterium called E.Coli is actually a bacteria found in the large intestines. Therefore, toilet hygiene is very important. Strict monitoring by parents is required.
